Recycling Cars and Motorcycles

I recently bought a 1962 Fiat 600 with no engine and transmission. I also purchased a salvaged Honda 1000 motorcycle. All of the motorcycle's electronics, drive-train, and some braking components will be used in the FIAT. The goal is to build a under $3500 "Smart" car - capable of 60 + mpg and built from parts already on the tail end of the manufacturer environmental impact curve. This is a trend that has caught on in Europe and South America, with some traction here in the states.

Oh, I forgot to mention... the car has front and side airbags with 4 wheel disc anti lock brakes; so it's a very safe car too!

And if you have no car building skills?Just do like I did...Buy a 1999 VW Beetle TDI with a 5-speed manual trans!Found one with a few scratches/dents on the body and a little rough interior that needed a bunch of maintenance but the engine/trans were in good condition. It gets 35-40 mpg around town and 45-55 mpg on the highway!Total cost $4,000.Last fill up was two months ago! I go about 600 miles before needing to fill up.
